Cheer Up, Mr Lee (Korean Movie)
Cheer Up,Mr Lee is directed by Lee Kae-Byek. It is a comedy/drama starring Cheol-Su (Cha Seung-Won) and Saet-Byeol (Um Chae-Young). The movie is kind of both funny and emotional. You can cry and laugh with them
Plot Synosis:
Cheol-Su is physical fit and handsome but he has an intellectual disability. He lives with his younger brother Young-Su (Park Hae-Joon). His brother has a small restaurant where Cheol-Su makes noddles and line up for it. One day, Saet-Byoul grandmother appeared to him and asked Cheol-Su to help her to find Samcheong Park, but what he doesn’t know is that he just set her up and took him to the hospital where Saet-Byoul is to take his blood and check it. The old woman is Cheol-Su mother in law (Kim Hae-Joon). Cheol-Su also meets Saet at the hospital. She is a girl with luekemia and she is also his daugther.
This is the Story of Cheer up, Mr Lee
The film begins with a muscular and handsome Cheol-Su. Lives in the house of his younger brother Young-Su who owns a restaurant. His life revolves around making noddles at his brother restaurant and lifting weights at the gym everyday. He likes to watch dramatic shows and is often proud of his muscles. Even though he is childish women still chase him.
One day, back at his brother’s house, a car stopped in front of him, an old woman asking directions to Samcheong Park. He ws force accompany the old woman in cheering the people he would cross at the same time. He showed the old man the right way to the park but she kept driving the car in a different direction. When Cheol-Su realizes that he might be kidnapped he scares the old man but in the end they reach their destination.
He found himself at the hospital getting blood drawn to test it. He wanted to go home but his attention was diverted to the TV drama. Next to him was a young patient who also liked to watch dramas. He teased the girl by saying “if you eat too much flour like this you’ll go bald”. The girl was annoyed with him, and force him to taste a biscuit. He liked it so the girl reciprocated and envied him.
A few moments later, Young-Su brother called him because he hadn’t come home yet. The brother found out where he was, so he picked him up. While he was teasing his brother to buy him biscuit, he pointed at the old woman who kidnapped him. Young-Su recognized the old man as if he had harbored a grudge against him for a long time.
This is Cheol-Su’s mother in law and the bald boy sitting next to him is his son Saet-Byeol who has Luekemia the reason why his grandmother brought his father to the hospital was to check his blood to see if it matches in the need for a bone narrow transplant of a seriously ill child. The old woman introduced to her father to the granddaugther, which shocked the girl because it was a childish. However, the happiness felt in their eyes after the dramatic meeting of father and daughter can be seen. His brother invited Cheol-Su to go home.
The next day, before leaving the house, Cheol-Su too his brother’s wallet and then had his friend go to the hospital to bring his daugther a biscuit. At the same time, Saet-Byeol sneaks into the room with help of his friends. While waiting at the place where there daughter used to sit, Cheol-Su notices that the daugther has just left the hospital. He chased him and blocked him before she could get off the train. She ran from the father and got into a stopped taxi but he was also on board.
In the parking lot of the hospital, Mr.Kim (Ahn Gil-Kang) report to Young-Su that Cheol-Su accompanied him to the hospital but several hours later he still hasn’t shown up. The brother followed to the hospital with his reprimanded daughter. Cheol-su’s mother in law noticed that her grandchild was missing from her bed. Saet-Byeol’s friends killed maliciously where his grandchild was going. Young-Su confronts the old woman saying that his brother kidnapped again. The old woman replied that maybe his brother kidnapped his daugther Saet-Byeol because she was also missing.
The father and daugther arrived at the bus terminal, Saet-Byeol wanted to leave the father but the teller asked if his parents were with him. She was forced to accompany his father to East-Daegu. Soon after, Cheol-Su received a call from the brother to find out their where about. The daughter said not to tell where they were going but the brother heard in a paassenger’s voice that they were going to Daegu. The daughter got angry and turned off the father’s cellphone so that they could not be traced.
Young-Su decides to follow the father and daugther to Daegu with his brother mother in law. While Mr.Kim asked for, a favor from a gangster boss on Daegu, Father and daughter were found and brought back to Seoul. While having a snack the old woman remebered his cruelty and belittling of Cheol-Su when he asked him for the hand of his doctor daughter. The two love each other so much that they got together even without the blessing of the girl’s mother.
Back in the present, the gangsters start looking for the father and daughter. The father and daughter reached the Daegu Stadium, they didn’t catch a single person inside the baseball stadium. A few moments later, the manager of the stadium arrived. Saet-Byeol begs the man if she can ask for a baseball with Lee Seung-Youp’ autograph and he promises to give it to him but today is Monday and there is no game. The man sent her back the next day at six o’clock in the evening to give it.
Saet-Byoul is disappointed because his friends birthday is tomorrow. They checked out the store near the staduim in hopes of finding an autographed baseball. As the search continued a group of men asked what they were looking for. Cheol-Su think these are gangster. Saet-Byeol asked if he knew of an autographed baseball for sale. They said that it is difficult to find the new player’s autograph but they can find a way if they have money, the girl doesn’t enough money so they asked for his father’s credit card.
After getting the card, The gangster immediately ran and Cheol-Su chased after them, terrified of his size. The three separeted until the one he chased reached the Subway. But Cheol-Su have phobia of Subway so he couldn’t follow the gangster. Meanwhile Saet-Byeol was afraid of the pigeons so she took shelter inside the ATM booth while waiting for his father to return.
Next scene, His brother went to the places where the credit card was used. They wonder why the card is used in entertainment and drinking establishment. At dusk, the father and daugther still haven’t met because Cheol-Su is looking for the famous player’s house. Mr.Kim threatened bloodshed if they did not find the father and daughter is Daegu where the credit card was used. The boss was scared and said he would send the father and daughter to find again.
Cheol-Su is hungry while searchig the baseball player’s house. He is already charging, he said her daughter is responsible for the payment. It was then that he realized that he had left his sick child alone. He was worried and thought that it might have been before the house of the baseball player he was looking for.
The gangster boss has given a warning to his men. He knows that one of them got Cheol-Su’s credit card, The boss threatened to punish them all if the father and daughter were not found before the sunrise. The gangsters immedaitely took action. Next scene, Cheol-Su accompanied by a drunk man who knows the famous player’s house. However, they were intercepted at the checkpoint. Cheol-Su remember his daughter again when he saw the lights of the baseball stadium. He ran towards the edge of the stadium where she left Saet-Byeol.
The child cried becasue she was left alone,. He explained that he chased the gangster but they escaped and then he searched the baseball player’s house. The daughter felt pity and warmth for the weak-minded faher. The police who chased him cried. They brought them to the precinct.
His brother, nephew and mother in law are still searching for their father and daughter. At the precinct, the daughter asked why they were imprisoned and the father replied that he had no money to pay for the tteokbokki he ate. The daughter said that they should go to sleep, the daughter was disappointed because she was sick and then the father with mental problem was still with him.
The next morning, The father and daughter were released an the Police Chief gave them breakfast first, who took pity on the condition of the two of them. They ate at a famous restaurant where baseball player’s eat. Saet-Byeol burst into tears when she saw the sought-after baseball with Lee Seung-Youps autograph. She cried as she said that she loved the baseball and told the father and daughter what they went through to the road just to get the baseball, tears were shed person in the restaurant who heard her. Little did she know that the famous baseball player was just by his side. Cheol-Su and Saet-Byeol immediately went to Saet-Byeol’s friend Young Jae in Daegu hospital’s ICU to give him the baseball gift.
They were on their way back to Seoul, Saet loaded the father and the father and daughter arrived at the bus terminal back to Seoul. When Cheol-Su bought a ticket he thought his daughter was sleeping. A few moments later he realized that she was unconcious. He immediately picked up and looked for the nearest hospital. While the gangster continues to chase him. People showed him the train ride to the hospital. He reached the stairs down the subway. Although he has a phobia of the subway, he tried to fight the fear to save his daugther’s life. While going down his memories of when he was a fireman came back.
One day there was a big fire inside the subway, thick smoke was coming from underneath so the leader told them not to get off and they would all die. A train employee said that people in the engine room were trapped. He immediately responded along with other fireman and tax alive who went to the engine room. One of those he saved from death was Mr.Kim while applying the medicine to Mr.Kim he noticed his mother in law not far away who was worried about his daughter who was on fire in the subway. He realized that his pregnant wife was still inside the subway. He immediately ran and pulled the firehose and then met the dark smoke and heat of fire inside the subway to look for his wife.
His companions were forced to follow him to help even at the cost of hist life, he looked for his pregnant wife, he found her unconscious, he put the gasmask on her and then he carried her out. He reached the exit but it was closed, he went back down and that’s when he loat conciousness. A few moments later, his fellow firefighters saw them and rushed them to the hospital. Cheol-Su and the baby in her wife’s womb survive but her wife did not. Even though Cheol-Su he had a mental problem.
In the present day, rescue found the father and daughter unconsious at the bottom of the subway entrance stairs. Inside the ambulance, the gangster confesses to Cheol-Su brother that they took the credit card. They were very worried about father and daughter because the traffic was not progressing. Angry with concern the boss ordered all the gangster to clear the way for the ambulance. Hastily responded to the boss’s order. One by one they asked all the drivers to pull over to allow the ambulance pass.
After a few days, the father and daughter were doing well. Saet-Byeol is also back at the hospital in Seoul where she is with friends who have luekemia. One day, Cheol-Su complains to her daugther because he is always the one pushing the wheelchair, it turns out that he wants her to ride the wheelchair and her daughter to do pushing.
Saet-Byeol is happy with his father and accepts the condition. While watching in the lobby of the hospital, Saet-Byeol asked the father to open the can but he was busy watching the drama. She tried to open it but was injured. The bleeding of the child’s wound did not stop, causing her to be rushed to the ICU. The doctor said Saet-Byeol would need a transplant but no one in the family had the blood for the operation.
They need to find donors as soon as possible. Even though he has a mental problem, Cheol-Su feels sorry for what is happening to his daughter.
The daughter felt sorry for what the father was going through while he was struggling, her mother in law told her to be strong so that he could take good of her daughter. The next morning, Saet-Byeol is entertained by friend by sticking sticker on the glass window accompanied by Cheol-Su. A few moments later, the people he saved from the fire arrived. The news spread that her daugther would need a donor for the operation. Many people came to have their blood checked, to find out if it would match Saet-Byeol’s blood.
In the last episode the daugther admits to the father that he is far from another father but she cannot imagine life without his father by his side, She also says that she is happy when they are together. The father said that he has a lot of love for her daughter, even though the father has shortcoming, Saet-Byeol feels how much his father loves him.
After the transplant Saet-Byeol’s condition improved and she returned to school with his father who loved him very much.
