Parasite
The film we are going to read today is the First Non-English film to win best picture in Australia it is the South Korean dark thriller titled “PARASITE” this story revolves around the KIM FAMILY struggling to survive in a small, semi-basement apartment. directed by Bong Joon Ho with a duration of 2 hours and 12 minutes starring Song Kang-Ho (Kim Ki-Taek), Lee Sun-Kyun (Mr.Park) and Cho Yeo-jeong Yeon Kyo).
The film begins with a poor family living a small basement. This is the “KIM FAMILY” Father Ki-Taek, Mother Chung-Sook, daughter Ki-Jung and son Ki-Woo. They connect to a neighbor’s WI-FI with a weak signal. They earn money by folding pizza boxes but it is not enough to meet their daily expenses.
One day Ki woo’s friend comes to visit and gives him the special stone that his grandfather used to give him. The friend said good luck to whoever takes care of it. The mother said it would be luckier i he brought food. Ki woo talks about the hardships their family is going through.
The friend said that he will study abroad and offered Ki woo to take over his English teaching to his girlfriend who is a rich man’s daughter. Ki woo refuses because he didn’t apply to college and won’t hired. The friend said that they can cheat the diploma and the friend will recommend him. His sister is good at photo shop so she mad a fake diploma at the computer shop.
The next day, Ki woo goes to a rich house that you’ll be fooled by its size. The house was once owned by a famous Architect Namgoong and was sold to the Park’s family who lived there. The maid of the house used to be the assistant of the architect who lived here.
The young man was accepted after his interview and demo while his mother watched. After introducing Ki woo to the assistant Mrs.Park mentioned that there is no long-term art teacher to her daughter Da Song who has mischievousness. The young man suddenly thought of his sister who loves art. He recommended her sister but was introduced by his cousin’s classmate who studied at the great art school.
The sister hid under the name Jessica so that it would be known that they were siblings. Ki-Jung was hired as an art teacher and pretended to be a therapist so she could demand a higher salary. After a while, Mr.Park arrived and sent the girl to the driver. He said to take him to the nearest train station. While inside the car, the girl allegedly took off her panties and put them everywhere.
The next day Mr.park accidentally saw the panties under the seat. The couple suspected the driver’s true identity and removed them. Ki-Jung mentions that his Uncle knows how to drive and recommends him. His father pretended to be his Uncle and and hired him as a driver.
The next scene the the siblings are not satisfied yet they also want to give their mother a job in the big house. The family plan how they can replace the housekeeper who lives there longer than the owner. Ki woo found out from Da Hye that the maid had an allergy to the peach fruit so she scraped the skin of a peach and secretly sprinkled it on the maid because of this the maid went to the hospital for a check-up.
The driver’s father secretly took a selfie that caught the helper and made a story to Mrs.Park. Even cheating on the boss has been commercialized and made into a career by them. They told the boss that their assistant had a TB. They set up the maid again and put red sauce on what the made spat on to emphasize that she was seriously ill.
The family fraud succeeds and the maid is evicted in no time. While on the trip the husband and wife talked about the fired helper. The driver’s father recommended a fake agency that could contact the helper. Mrs.Park calls the agency and Ki-Jung pretends to be an employee of the fake agency.
Finally the swindler family is complete in the Park’s house and no one can see through their tricks. Little by little their situation changes and they are able to Unli samgyupsal with soju, One day the Park family decided to go out of town of celebrate Da-Sung’s birthday.
After they left, the Kim Family celebrated they lived a rich life and had parties while the family was enjoying themselves, suddenly the doorbell rang outside the door. The former assistant said she was going to get the forgotten bag in the basement. The mother let her in and she immediately went to the basement. After a few minutes the older helper had not returned so Ching-Sook followed.
The assistant was still there and trying to push the cabinet. It turned out that there was an iron stuck in its foot, Chung-Sook removed the iron and they pushed the cabinet. Turns out there is a secret door behind to the secret basement. The Park family had no idea that their assistant’s husband had been hiding there for a long time.
The previous owner did not inform the new occupant of the secret place so only the former maid knew about it. She hid his husband here because he as in debt and someone was making an attempt on his life. Th maid begged them to serve the husband for the time being. The mother did not agree and warned that she would call the police.
The maid begs while her husband and two children listen on the stairs. When suddenly one of then slipped which resulted in them all falling down the stairs. Hearing the assistant call Ki-Taek his father she immediately videotapes the family she sees as conspiring.
Now they changed the situation. The assistant threatened to send the video to to boss but Chung-Sook begged, She and his husband went up to the living room and told the Kim family who remained on their knees and their hands up. The next day the family took a tempo and stole the cellphone form the couple. They were about to delete the video when the phone suddenly rang.
Chung-Sook talks to the boss and says that they went home early because of the typhoon. She requested that she cook ramen. They are near and will be there in less than a minute. While Chung-Sook cooks, The family work together to bring the couple back to the basement and quickly clean the house.
Chung-Sook kicks the maid who almost escapes so she drops her and loses consciousness. The Parka family arrived unaware of what was happening inside their house, Ki-Taek managed to close the secret door while the two children hid underneath.
While the Park family was upstairs. The Kim family came pout of their hiding place but the Da Sung Suddenly came down and the father and children hid under the sofa. The child insisted on camping and sleeping outside the house so the couple was force to sleep in the living room to keep an eye on the child.
While lying on the sofa, the couple talked about Ki-Taek’s strong smell that the man could hardly bear and couldn’t do anything. They were upset because the boy told the maid and two tutors the same thing. Maybe it’s the smell of the basement they live in so they can’t do anything about it.
They continued to listen underneath until the couple felt warmth of their bodies. They spent the night and fell asleep, which gave the father and children a chance to go home. When they reached the house submerged in flood so they evacuated and went to evacuation area.
There they slept with the others who were flooded. Ki-Jung is invited by Mrs.park for her daughter’s impromptu party. That’s how Ki-Woo invited Da-Hye. The father is overtime due to a sudden birthday party. The boss went grocery shopping and while sitting in the car the woman smelled something bad.
He put his hand on his nose which made the driver feel bad because he didn’t want such a sensitive person’s behavior. Mrs. Park couldn’t stand the smell so she just opened the car window. While the party is being held, Ki-Woo and student Da Hye are upstairs taking advantage of the busyness of the people at the party.
The young man asked the young woman if it was appropriate for her to join the group of rich people, Da Hye nodded and said yes. Ki-Woo is uneasy as he thinks that their secret will be revealed and they will lose their jobs if the couple who are under the basement gets up.
He went down to the basement, it turned out that the wife of the former assistant was waiting there and tied Ki-woo’s neck but he escaped and the rope hung around his neck so the wife of the former assistant caught him and hit him on the head of the boy and he lost consciousness.
The ex-helper’s wife went to the party and there was trouble there. He saw Ki-Jung walking and wounded him. Ki-Taek approaches his son to help him because of the incident that Da-Sung passed out. Mr. Park called Mr. Kim to drive them but he was also beside himself when he saw his son.
He also saw because Ki-woo was unconscious because Mr. Park didn’t know that Ki-woo and Ki-Jung were his children because Chung-Sook also saw what he did to his son he killed the man he approached It was Mr. Park’s but he said that the man smelled bad so he stayed away from him. Ki-Taek saw this and remembered that he was also told by the stinker that he lost himself and killed Mr. Park. He ran away and suddenly disappeared.
Ki-Jung died and Ki-woo recovered but developed a mental illness. Later, the mother and daughter were convicted of deception, fraud and conspiracy but the court also released them without punishment on the condition that their actions will be based so that the frauds will not be repeated.
The Park family sold the house to a German who did not know about the crime in the house. The driver, Ki-Taek, is still in the basement. It turns out that their father hid there after killing his boss and no one knew about it, not even the mother and daughter. He used murse code by turning on and off the light outside in the hope that one day his son would notice that he was in the basement hiding.
It didn’t take long while Ki-woo was at the top of the mountain using binoculars to catch a glimpse of the sold house, he also noticed that the light in the basement was turning off, he realized that it was a message and he found out that it was coded. He found out that the father was still alive and was in the basement of the big house.
Ki-Taek regrets killing his former boss while facing his picture. On the other hand, Ki-woo tells himself that he will work hard to earn a lot of money and buy the big house to rebuild his family. It came true and he bought the house, Ki-Taek can be seen climbing up from the basement without hesitation and finally he and his father hug each other. It turns out it’s just an imagination far from reality
